Fast Pace Race coming to Fair grounds
F.A.S.T. Pace Race Page Sign-Up
Big Creek Greenway comes to Forsyth Two new sections of the Big
creek greenway are scheduled to open in August 2009. Sections 1, 2 and 3
will start from McFarland road and continue to Bethelview road. This
section will be approximately 6.7 miles one way. Sections 4 and 5 are
currently in the design and development stage. These sections will
continue northwest and end at The Sawnee Mountain preserve past thru
Fowler Park, which will be opening in 2012. Fowler Park will be part of
the Forsyth County parks and Rec system and become a permanent access
point for the greenway with parking and restrooms. Temporary access
points for sections 1-3 will be located at McFarland Rd, Union Hill Rd,
and Bethelview Rd. This location will have limited gravel parking and
temporary restrooms. Nearby residents are encouraged to run, walk or
cycle to these locations. This location will get replaced with permanent
trailheads, hopefully with in the next two years. There are also some long-term plans in the works to connect sections 1-3 in Forsyth County to the Big Creek greenway that currently ends at Webb Bridge road in Alpharetta. Additional Funding and roadways still have to be acquired. It appears due to so much previous development in the area that a lot of this extension will have to be completed via sidewalks. Hopefully Forsyth County, Fulton County and Alpharetta city will take lessons from Gwinnett Country who has been building sidewalks that are runner, walker and biker friendly to go along with there award winning parks system. Just in case you’re not familiar with these sidewalks their wider, asphalt (not concrete) and in most places have a stripe painted down the centerline. Look at the sidewalks along side McGinnis Ferry road in Gwinnett or Peachtree parkway along side the Forum shops in Gwinnett County and you’ll see these sidewalks. We would estimate the section connecting the old greenway to the new would have a high volume and would certainly need this type sidewalk.
