Fast Pace Race coming to Fair grounds

Forsyth Area Striders team (F.A.S.T) in conjunction with PCEC will present The Georgia Urology FAST Pace Race on October 24, 2009. We’ve put together a first class 10K/5K that is not only part of a national race series, but also a USATF certified 10K Peachtree Road Race qualifier. Our course is set up by runners for runners with both the 5K and 10K being point to point runs with an overall elevation drop to the finish line. Our 5K course will produce many memorable PR’s and our 10K course with it’s beautiful half mile visible down hill finish will give many runners their much sought after Peachtree RR qualifying time. All runners love to run a PR (personal record) and will remember that they ran it here. The Cumming Fair Grounds will be the staging/finishing area that will give us parking for approximately 2000 cars and restrooms with ample stalls to virtually eliminate waiting lines even for women. We will offer buses to transport runners/walkers to the starting line, but for the runners who want to run a pre race warm up; it is only one mile to the start from the fair grounds via the shortest route along sidewalks. The finishing area is inside the fair grounds and is set up so all participants will pass by our sponsors’ booths on the way to pick up their advanced technical fiber t-shirts and goodie bags. The awards ceremony will be held in this area as well to maximize exposure for our valuable sponsors. Although this race is about a disease that affects men, we want to acknowledge the supportive women in their lives by offering women’s cut technical fiber shirts for early registrations. Not only are these shirts a great value for our participants, but also will give continuous exposure for our sponsors. No other road race in metro Atlanta offers this much value and convenience in one event.

Big Creek Greenway comes to Forsyth

Two new sections of the Big creek greenway are scheduled to open in August 2009. Sections 1, 2 and 3 will start from McFarland road and continue to Bethelview road. This section will be approximately 6.7 miles one way. Sections 4 and 5 are currently in the design and development stage. These sections will continue northwest and end at The Sawnee Mountain preserve past thru Fowler Park, which will be opening in 2012. Fowler Park will be part of the Forsyth County parks and Rec system and become a permanent access point for the greenway with parking and restrooms. Temporary access points for sections 1-3 will be located at McFarland Rd, Union Hill Rd, and Bethelview Rd. This location will have limited gravel parking and temporary restrooms. Nearby residents are encouraged to run, walk or cycle to these locations. This location will get replaced with permanent trailheads, hopefully with in the next two years.

There are also some long-term plans in the works to connect sections 1-3 in Forsyth County to the Big Creek greenway that currently ends at Webb Bridge road in Alpharetta. Additional Funding and roadways still have to be acquired. It appears due to so much previous development in the area that a lot of this extension will have to be completed via sidewalks. Hopefully Forsyth County, Fulton County and Alpharetta city will take lessons from Gwinnett Country who has been building sidewalks that are runner, walker and biker friendly to go along with there award winning parks system. Just in case you’re not familiar with these sidewalks their wider, asphalt (not concrete) and in most places have a stripe painted down the centerline. Look at the sidewalks along side McGinnis Ferry road in Gwinnett or Peachtree parkway along side the Forum shops in Gwinnett County and you’ll see these sidewalks. We would estimate the section connecting the old greenway to the new would have a high volume and would certainly need this type sidewalk.

Georgia Urology supports the Fast Pace Race

Prostate cancer is the most common major cancer in American men today.  One in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. That is why on Saturday, October 24, 2009, Forsyth Area Striders Team (F.A.S.T.) in conjunction with the Prostate Cancer Education Council (PCEC) and Sanofi Aventis is introducing the National Pace Race Series to Metro Atlanta. This series was launched in 2002 to increase awareness and education on prostate cancer. Were proud to announce on June 23rd Georgia Urology became our title sponsor for this event. There long-standing commitment to save lives in Georgia thru treatment and early detection is second to none.
